Most of us have a routine. In the late afternoon I work out. Then I get a shower. And I shave.... using Steam's razor sharp user interface to do the job. Its precise steel colored edges are better than BIC and get closer than Gillette. I mean, the Steam UI is SHARP! The recent changes aren't all bad, but they've definately softened a bit. Don't get me wrong, I still love it, but why does everything in the online world become softer, rounder, and more bubbly?
I know technology allows for a more polished look and better blended colors, but come on! The Steam UI change was nice, I can still shave with it, but how about the other changes infiltrating our cold, sharp, precise PC world?
YouTube. What happened to YouTube? One day I log in and its a frikken white out! Can't see the ratings, end up clicking on useless videos that I previously would've known NOT to click on due to the lack of stars.... Half the time the thumbnails of the videos also whiteout and nothing will save to my favorites and I can't post comments. Have to refresh 92347283752395 times and then when the blizzard departs I can at least see things again. I leave my light off okay? I like to play games and watch movies in the dark and totally immerse myself in my lazy little world. Then I go to YouTube and HOLY HELL I GET HIT WITH SEARING WHITE LIGHT! The first time this happened I was literally blind for 2 hours. I firmly believe that the next change will be as follows: You log in, and you get snow. Old School black and white TV static. And you have to try to click on one of the little pixels to access a random video.
Skype is another one. I'm minding my own business one day and WTF the sounds have become cryptic and unsettling, the aesthetic has morphed into some kind of frightening organic mess like the afterbirth of some half human half robot hybrid.
Out of nowhere my most frequented and beloved online sanctuaries are transforming into some new world order of bubbles and gloss, where organization holds no value. Everything is thrown into a virtual blender and spewed back up on the screen and it's called an improvement! Is it because of the general dumbing down of the human race or the simple fact that the universe tends toward disorder?
And windows...

....I predict the future will look very frightening.
I have to agree, while I like new stuff they tend to go over-board with the changes sometimes. Or add something that should be on the bottom of their to-do list.
YES. Youtube needs a "lights out" feature. Would be great. But what annoys me the most, are the ads that /scoll up over the video.
Regarding Steam, I think I liked the old version better, but I really can't complain about the new one. 8p
While I agree the steam look is very much too web 2.0 bubbly, I do think it was a much needed upgrade. I do like all the new ways to find out what your friends are playing, now I just have to find some friends :(
I'm just waiting for steam to allow users to develop plugins for their overlay. So someone will write an IM client plugin that allows me to IM over MSN/Google/Yahoo/ICQ or whatever IM client you use without having to alt+tab out.
(Also to go along with your random GUI upgrades, google has updated their look and started using HTML5)
