Addiction = Smart Marketing?

I was browsing some sites (as I usually do on the interwebs along with the rest of the world) and I noticed a banner ad.  This ad was for an mmorpg, and they were marketing themselves as "The most addictive game ever."

I was wondering what everyone else thought about this, good idea? bad idea? don't give two craps?   I just thought it was kind of lame, and makes me not want to even try the game, not because I might get addicted, but because it's probably the complete opposite.  If you have to state that your game is addictive, it's not, and I'll uninstall it in 5 min.

well, I agree that claiming to be something usually means you want ppl to think that, even if it's not true. They may have aimed to be the most addictive game ever when they set out to design it. Maybe they've got subliminals and it really is addictive, lol.

the noobs, the nerds and the addicted?
I guess all 3 of those categories could fall for the cunning, tricky and well thought add (notice the sarcasm) gauzza is speaking of. What about me you ask? I started auto-filtering those adds in my mind as where, in the last 6 years, I have never clicked any add on the internet and gained benefit out of it.

Addiction is never a good thing in any form of anything. If you become addicted, you're dependant and absence of your addiction can drive you to do things that aren't exactly rational. Anyone seen that video of Hitler's ranger getting banned? Yeah I've seen people freak out like that when their parents cancelled their WOW accounts. It is very very sad.
Advertising addiction is in no way a good PR move. Ask the Tobacco company. They've been trying to sweep it, along with lung cancer, under the rug for years.
