With a good group of friends, any game can go from being a POS to a great game. I’ve noticed lately, no matter how good a game is, if I’m not playing the same game as my core group of gaming friends, I lose interest fast.
I’ve been searching for the past few months for a new game to sink some real time into and haven’t been able to come up with anything that great, until earlier this week when a friend convinced me to buy MAG for the ps3. While MAG is by no means the next great game, and I think there is a bunch of game mechanics that should be re-worked, it has the ability to bring a decent group of gamers together, and allow them to enjoy the game. I guess because MAG relies on the fact that you have to coordinate, or you will lose… a lot.
Being in my recent gaming slump, I started to think back to all of the other multiplayer games I’ve put a bunch of time into in the last few years. This one terrible game called kart rider comes to mind (basically a rip off of Mario Kart). This game was pretty bad, but the 3 people I knew that were playing it made it fun. The same thing goes with the new Mario game that came out for the WII, it’s a decent game, but not great, but add some friends and beer, and it’s a great game. That’s true with 95% of WII games though. Take some crappy free Korean mmorpg that makes me want to kill myself, add some good friends, and the mindless grinding makes my nipples hard.
Obviously good games are fun, and playing with people you know is only going to make them better. Nowadays with all this multiplayer action decent games or even terrible games can become great games with the right group of players.
